If you feel like the Wicked Witch of the West in the August heat (I’m melting!) here are some makeup must-haves
Makeup artist and aesthetician
Lacinda Fritter knows a thing or two about melt-free makeup. She specializes in weddings—regularly helping area brides look fresh for hours—and studied makeup for film, television, and print in Los Angeles. Here, she shares some of her favorite ways to keep makeup in place in the heat and humidity.
Apply a pea-size amount to clean, moisturized skin before your concealer or foundation. “The key is to apply it lightly with a synthetic brush or warm it with your fingertips and then press it into the skin,” says Fritter, who likes Jane Iredale Absence Oil Control Primer, $39, at AesthetiCare Med Spa in Leawood. “It actually absorbs oil. I’ve used it on almost every bride.”
Resist the urge to touch up sweat and shine with powders, which can get cakey, and use blotting papers instead. We like the smooth, plastic-y sheets that absorb shine.
It’s no secret regular mascara formulas can run in the heat and leave you with raccoon eyes. Water resistant and waterproof formulas like Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Waterproof Mascara, $32, at Halls Kansas City stay put. “Add an extra layer or two in the summer,” says Fritter. “It defines eyes without much shadow and liner, which can smudge the heat.”
“Generally speaking, go lighter with your makeup in the summer,” says Fritter. The less you put on, the less there is to slide off. For times you want some coverage, choose a lightweight foundation that matches your skin type and color. Fritter likes a tinted moisturizer with SPF for dry skin and Chanel Ultrawear Flawless Foundation for oily complexions, $60 at Halls Kansas City in Crown Center.
A densely pigmented, cream formula will resist melting and keep blemishes and dark circles covered. NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer, $30 at sephora.com is Fritter’s pick. Dab it on with your ring finger or a small brush and blend it into skin.
