Geri Higgins, owner of Portfolio Kitchen & Home, shares her latest obsession
A well-designed kitchen is customized to function for how the homeowner lives. Organizational kitchen storage plays a major role in bringing that vision, or design, to life. Recently, it has become a trending topic because of Marie Kondo’s best-seller, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, where she reiterates her KonMari method of simplifying and organizing the home to enrich lives.
This concept, and service, is something Geri Higgins, owner of Portfolio Kitchen & Home, has offered for years as part of the design process.
“A kitchen is a place of process and rituals,” she says, “but proper organization is most important in this space because it elevates not only your personal experience but also the functionality of daily living.”
So how do you get your kitchen life in order? First, determine how you live and what your daily routine is, so it can be zoned for proper use. Got a coffeemaker on the countertop? Rearrange the surrounding space by placing everything you need within arm’s reach. Love to bake? Outfit one of your cabinets with a spring-loaded custom shelf for your mixer, customize the adjacent cabinets for sheets and pans, dedicate drawers for tools and fill tabletop jars with ingredients.
When done right, proper organization also acts as a functional design element in the space. Plus, it simply makes things easier to find.
“Great organization, especially in the kitchen, honors all processes, the culinary experience and the items themselves,” Higgins says. To get your “stuff” in order, contact the store for a consultation—or a new kitchen with all the organizational bells and whistles imaginable.
