Mad About Plaid

Go beyond the button-up shirts and embrace this season’s more sophisticated plaids

Plaid. It’s as unmistakably fall as turning leaves and pumpkin-spice everything. And in the world of menswear, it appeared on this season’s runways with increased frequency and variety. It’s as if designers gave everyone permission to go a little bolder with the motif than would have felt right in recent years—to embrace a bigger, more colorful tartan, pile a large-print windowpane over a smaller-scale check, or to slip on a tone-on-tone plaid suit, which feels brazen in a closet full of solids.

Whatever you do, go beyond the button-up shirt. Try trousers, knits, sport coats, two- or three-piece suits, ties and bowties in wooly tartans and flannel checks. No matter the iteration, plaid adds texture and oomph to whatever it touches. It’s a new season; take a risk. Our local menswear shops are flush with options.

Here are some of our favorites:

1. The Trousers
For a cozy, casual look, top these with a fuzzy sweater. Neutral hues keep the bold weave looking cool, not Caddyshack.

2. The Sport Coat
French blue is the new black. And this blue-on-blue plaid is a little more adventurous than the solid version. The result? Subtle and stunning without being excessive.

3. The Tie
Designed and made right here in Kansas City, the classic navy and dark green tartan is as timeless as our hometown barbecue.

4. The Suit
Just enough punch to stand out in a room full of solids, this 100 percent wool suit is 100 percent elegant.

6. The Scarf
It’s an un-trad plaid scarf that’s a swell addition to a classic trench or overcoat. And the soft cashmere feel heightens the cozy quotient.
