Thanks to new styles, shearling is feeling fresh again
For several years, parkas and puffers have dominated the flurry of coats descending upon Kansas City’s winter streets. But this year, shearling is feeling fresh again. In part because the ’70s are back in a big way. Which means the traditional tan suede versions—the ones that conjure up images of Robert Redford, Ralph Lauren, and rugged, yet luxurious, ranch life—still have plenty of swagger. New styles have more colors, fabrics, and textures (both real sheepskin and synthetic) than ever before. The fuzzy collars and lapels are popping up on denim, cashmere, and bomber jackets; the shapes are shorter and more streamlined than their heavier, boxier predecessors. The end result takes shearling coats and jackets past leisure time. They’re no longer out of place uptown, downtown, or heading to the office. With the multitude of options, you’ll surely find one to suit your style.
1 AVIATOR Marc New York by Andrew Marc Amherst aviator jacket, $160, from Halls on Grand in Crown Center
Reminiscent of the Marlboro Man, this faux shearling aviator jacket shows you can never go wrong with a classic.
2 DENIM Levi’s sherpa trucker jacket in juniper, $98, from Ulah in Woodside Village
The inside of this jacket is lined, too, so you can stay warm and stylish. Layer it over sweaters and plaid flannels for weekends.
3 CASHMERE Snowtop cashmere and wool coat, $2,100, from Alaskan Fur in Overland Park
When traditional suede is swapped for cashmere, shearling becomes more versatile. This brown coat with merino shearling lining transitions from elegant to off duty effortlessly (and also comes in black).
4 VEST Black merino shearling vest, $1,600, from Alaskan Fur in Overland Park
All the features of the classic coat—suede fully lined with shearling—minus the sleeves. Dark fur and contrasting leather trim give this shearling vest with whiskey trim a handsome modern edge (it comes in several variations too).
5 LEATHER MOTO Baldwin The Henrik peacoat, $1,137, from Baldwin in Town Center Crossing and the Country Club Plaza
All black, a matte crackle finish, and contrasting zippers on this peacoat give shearling a sleek downtown look, proving luxurious doesn’t have to be precious.
6 GLOVES Merola shearling-lined lambskin gloves, $275, from Hudson & Jane in the Crestwood Shops
The buttery exterior of these lambskin gloves complements leather, cashmere, denim, even your parka or puffer; the fluffy shearling lining keeps the cold out. They also come in black.
