New Traditional in Mission Hills

Highlights from the 2014 Kappa Kappa Gamma Holiday Homes Tour

One of Kansas City’s favorite December traditions, the Kappa Kappa Gamma Holiday Homes Tour is an inspiring partnership of architecturally significant homes decked in festive style by Kansas City’s most gifted floral designers. It’s also a great opportunity to pick up some expert tips on making our own homes merry and bright

New Traditional in Mission Hills

When Mike and Chastitie Walden renovated their home, they gave it a touch of Hollywood Regency glamour. It was up to Craig Sole of Craig Sole Designs to make it festive as well. In the breakfast room with its red and white fretwork wallpaper, white twigs add holiday spirit to the chandelier. Clear Louis Ghost chairs surround a red-and-white table runner placed on the diagonal, while a centerpiece of greenery, white twigs and lime-green hydrangea bring it all together. Sconces in the red-and-white living room also get the white twig treatment. Sole decorated the tree with nostalgic children’s toys in miniature—teddy bears, balls and books—as well as handcrafted ornaments that suggest timelessness. “Contrast is the key,” he says. The garland on the staircase has the same airy, sculptural feel as the rest of the house. “I love to weave two or three different garlands together to make one that is denser and richer,” Sole says. Grapevine horns of plenty filled with red flowers, green see-through raffia balls, and white magnolia intertwine with evergreens and gold ornaments and lacey white snowflakes—like a chorus line in a vintage Hollywood musical. And it’s magic.
