Two new fitness studios are opening in Brookside this spring—Barre3 and Orangetheory Fitness. Here’s the scoop.

Barre3
This newcomer to Kansas City’s barre scene is the first area outpost of the Portland-based franchise known for blending ballet-inspired moves with yoga and Pilates. In 60 minutes, the vigorous workout aims to lengthen muscles, build a stronger core and improve posture, says barre3 Kansas City owner Caroline Harris. Expect the small movements, pose holding and muscle burns synonymous with barre workouts and then add low-impact cardio bursts that include bigger movements to get your heart pumping. The 2,500-square-foot, two-studio space is set to open this month and will have barre3’s signature clean, modern look plus towel service and childcare. While construction wraps up, catch one of Harris’ pop-up classes.

Orangetheory Fitness
Orangetheory Brookside will offer the brand’s signature one-hour full-body high-intensity interval training classes. The half cardio, half strength training classes incorporate treadmills, rowing machines and weights, and no two workouts are the same, says Darrin McDonald, owner and managing partner of Orangetheory Fitness Brookside and Nall Hills. Members wear monitors that measure their heart rate and project it on screens to track their efforts. The goal is to drive the heart rate up and trigger afterburn—a scientifically proven effect where your body burns calories at an increased rate for up to 36 hours after completing the workout. The almost 3,400-square-foot studio opened March 31 and is the fifth area location of the Florida-based franchise, with more in development. It offers lockers, showers and around 50 classes per week, starting at 5 a.m. “We’re proud to be a part of Brookside,” says McDonald. “When the space became available, we jumped on it.”
