This cocktail recipe will satisfy your Orange Crush cravings

The Monarch's Dominic Petrucci and Brock Schulte

Brock Schulte does a pretty good John Candy impersonation, which he demonstrates as he smiles and asks, “Orange Whip? Orange Whip? Three Orange Whips?” The quote, a reference from the 1980 classic The Blues Brothers, originally referenced a non-alcoholic beverage but has inspired many a “hard” version. Schulte, the bar manager at the Monarch Bar, worked with principle bartender Dominic Petrucci to make a version unique to the Monarch.

Instead of simply adding booze to a classic Orange Julius, the Orange Whip at the Monarch features two infinity spirits—rum and amaro, as well as Ketel One Orange, which adds a dry, bitter orange-peel note.

(An infinity spirit is a mélange of different brands of spirit all mingled and allowed to meld. It’s simple to do: Take the 10 percent of a bottle of a spirit you enjoy and combine it with the end of a different brand of the same spirit in a decanter. Add as many different brands as you would like. Let the mixture sit and enjoy in your favorite cocktail.)

While the rum and vodka are expected, the amaro adds an herbal undercurrent that brings the essence of orange peel into the drink. The resulting cocktail is a more refined version of what you might have enjoyed as a kid—sweet but not saccharine. Don’t forget to cue up the classic while you sip.

Orange Whip

1/2 ounce heavy cream
1/4 barrel-aged demerara rich simple syrup
1/2 ounce Ketel One Orange
1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
3/4 ounce infinity amaro
1 ounce infinity rum
11/2 ounces orange juice
2 ounces orange Fanta

In a shaker, combine all ingredients except Fanta over ice. Shake easily but for an extended amount of time (about a minute) to ensure a frothy texture. Strain into a Collins glass and top with orange Fanta.
