Living Room

What design lessons can we learn from a 16th-century Belgian tapestry depicting Alexander the Great admiring himself in a mirror, which had just come back into fashion in the 1580s? The bold leader from ancient Greece commands us to mix styles, bend the “rules” and conquer design fears.

The designers hung the draperies as high as possible to give the room more height. They also combined old with new—contemporary sconces with transitional furnishings and a mix of antiques—to make the room look and feel like it was collected over time.

The muted, neutral tapestry colors provide a relaxing palette in this entertaining space, and the glazing on the walls adds depth.
